Fuel Resource - Which Country in the World Has the Largest Coal Reserves

Coal remains one of the most important elements of the global energy balance, especially in the context of growing demand for energy resources and geopolitical instability. The total explored coal reserves amount to hundreds of billions of tons, ensuring access to this resource for many decades, and in some cases, even hundreds of years.

Coal Reserves in the World

Fossil coal, according to WBank, is conditionally divided into hard and lignite. The total coal reserves in the world amount to 14,311,153 million tons, including 9,428,427 million tons of hard coal and 4,882,726 million tons of lignite. If we talk about extracted resources, the total figure is 982,714 million tons, of which hard coal is 518,204 million tons and lignite is 464,510 million tons.

Which Country Has the Largest Coal Reserves

In terms of world states, the reserves of this mineral are as follows:

  • USA - 237,195 million tons (26.62%);
  • Russia - 157,010 million tons (17.61%);
  • China - 114,500 million tons (12.84%);
  • Australia - 76,400 million tons (8.57%);
  • India - 60,600 million tons (6.8%);
  • Germany - 40,548 million tons (4.55%);
  • Ukraine - 33,872 million tons (3.8%);
  • Kazakhstan - 33,600 million tons (3.77%);
  • South Africa - 30,156 million tons (3.38%);
  • Indonesia - 28,017 million tons (3.14%);
  • Turkey - 8,702 million tons (0.98%);
  • Colombia - 6,746 million tons (0.76%);
  • Brazil - 6,630 million tons (0.74%);
  • Canada - 6,582 million tons (0.74%).
  • Poland - 5,465 million tons (0.61%).
  • Greece - 3,020 million tons (0.34%).
  • Bulgaria - 2,366 million tons (0.27%),
  • Pakistan - 2,070 million tons (0.23%).
  • Thailand - 1,239 million tons (0.14%).
  • Mexico - 1,211 million tons (0.14%).

It is noted that Indonesia, Brazil, Greece, Pakistan, and Thailand do not extract hard coal at all - only lignite.

The leading global exporters of fossil coal remain Indonesia, Australia, and Russia, which account for 80% of all supplies. In addition to the mentioned countries, coal is also exported (in smaller volumes) by Poland, China, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic, Germany, New Zealand, India, United Kingdom, Chile, Spain, Turkey, Japan, Mexico, Italy, and Brazil.
