Pilgrims gather in Uman to celebrate the Jewish New Year
The Jewish New Year Rosh HaShanah will be celebrated in Uman at the grave of Rabbi Nachman, which is visited by Hasidic pilgrims. This year, the celebration falls on the year 5785 since the creation of the world. They will start the celebration on the evening of October 2 and end it on October 4. Currently, around 5000 Hasidim have arrived in Uman, reported Iryna Rybnytska, director of the charitable fund 'Historical and Cultural Center of the City of Uman.'
Deputy Mayor Oleh Hanich stated that the city is preparing to host 50,000 pilgrims. All services are already operating in an enhanced mode. Checkpoints are being established around the perimeter of the festival, where the national police and other services are stationed to maintain law and order.
'Currently, checkpoints are being organized around the perimeter of the place where the Rosh HaShanah celebration will take place. These are checkpoints, blocks for the national police, and corresponding services to ensure law and order in the territory of this celebration,' noted Oleh Hanich.
Previously, it was reported that Israeli police officers had arrived in Uman to ensure security during the Rosh HaShanah celebrations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine urged Hasidim to refrain from pilgrimage to Uman due to Russia's military aggression. Hasidim who still arrived should consider the restrictions of martial law and possible complications of the stay.
The Mayor of Uman, Iryna Pletnyova, confirmed that the city is ready to receive pilgrims. An action plan has been developed in case of emergencies, and the necessary sanitary conditions have been ensured.
Also, on September 23, a special regime for entry, exit, and movement around the city will be introduced in Uman.
