According to the Izmail District State Administration, currently, 32 settlements in the Odesa region are recognized as endemic for leptospirosis. Mainly at risk of infection are villagers, fishermen, outdoor workers, and vacationers near water bodies, as the causative agents of this disease are found in rodents.

How Dangerous is Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is characterized by damage to the body’s blood vessels and can lead to damage to various organs such as the liver, kidneys, and muscles, accompanied by a prolonged fever. More than 70% of hospitalized patients experience severe difficulties with the disease, and the mortality rate is about 20%.

How to Protect Yourself

Leptospirosis can be transmitted to humans through contact with infected animals or contaminated water. Medical specialists advise regularly conducting rodent control, maintaining cleanliness in basements, landfills, and avoiding swimming in suspicious water bodies.
