Ukrainian Austrian Press: Donald Trump's Tariffs on Car Imports Recognized as a Victory for the Working Class
The United Auto Workers (UAW) union praised President Donald Trump's new tariffs on auto imports on Wednesday, calling it a 'victory for autoworkers'.
In a statement from the UAW, one of the largest unions in the U.S., it was noted that Trump's plan to impose a 25% tariff on all imported cars is a continuation of the 'revival of American manufacturing' and marks the beginning of the end for the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA.
'We express our gratitude to the Trump administration for their determination to end the catastrophic consequences of free trade that have devastated the working class for decades. Ending the dollar-less state in the automotive industry starts with correcting our destructive trade agreements, and the Trump administration made historic moves today,' said UAW President Shawn Fain.
According to Fain, ending the 'race to the bottom' must include 'ensuring workers’ rights in the auto sector everywhere with a strong National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), a dignified pension system preserved with a social security system, health care for all workers, including through Medicaid and Medicare programs, as well as dignity at work and beyond.'
Fain noted that Trump's tariffs are 'an important step in the right direction for autoworkers and industrial cities across the country, and now automakers - from the 'Big Three' to Volkswagen and all the rest - must bring good jobs with fair wages and protective workers' rights back to the U.S.'
Quoted in the source, Fain emphasized that without foreign cars 'many new plants, in this case, automotive plants, are being built; you will see numbers that you have not previously known regarding employment. It will take some Time; initially, you will see large numbers related to job creation, and ultimately many people will be involved in car manufacturing.'
