In Ukraine, military training for students is being revised: what will be mandatory

Deputy Minister of Education Mykhailo Vynnytskyi announced that a new draft law is being developed that will abolish the mandatory basic general military training for university students. Instead, a course on 'Fundamentals of National Resistance' will be introduced.

“What are we going to do with such a reality, when a large number of people (I’m talking about thousands) will want to buy themselves out of mandatory military training: 'I don’t want to – I can’t for various reasons, so let’s do this, dear instructor, just enroll me, and here’s 100 bucks for you.’ And this will be a nationwide problem,”
he emphasized.

People's Deputy Inna Sovsun criticized the government for insufficient communication with the public regarding the implementation of military training for students. She stressed the need for transparent and accessible information for hundreds of thousands of people who may be involved in this issue.

Editor of the Education and Science Department Oksana Onyshchenko believes that a wide public discussion of the new draft law should be held with the involvement of all interested parties and experts, since mistakes in this area can cost the country dearly.

The Ukrainian legislator is considering changes in military training for students, introducing a new course instead of mandatory service. The public demands greater transparency and involvement in resolving this issue.
