The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus plans to hold a meeting of international experts due to increased concern about the spread of monkeypox. This was reported by VOA.
Monkeypox is spreading beyond the Democratic Republic of Congo, so the WHO emergency committee will consult “as soon as possible” to inform it “whether the outbreak is a public health emergency of international concern”.
An international public health emergency declared over pox
WHO has declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) due to concern over pox, which lasted from July 2022 to May 2023. Since September 2023, the mpox virus has been rapidly spreading in the DR Congo.
The head of WHO reports that over 11 thousand cases of the disease and 445 deaths have been registered in Congo. Children have been the most affected. Since July 11, the disease has spread to neighboring countries.
