At the beginning of June 2025, leading retail chains in Ukraine recorded significant fluctuations in prices for basic vegetables. In particular, 'plum' variety tomatoes in the Megamarket chain reached a price of 120 hryvnias per kilogram, which is 18% higher than the average price for this category.
Price monitoring in the largest supermarkets in the country showed a substantial difference in the cost of identical products. Red tomatoes exhibit the widest price disparity: from 73.99 hryvnias at Novus to 118.60 hryvnias at Auchan. The average price for red tomatoes is 99.30 hryvnias per kilogram.Pink tomatoes are sold at the same price of 99.90 hryvnias in Auchan and Metro chains. 'Plum' variety tomatoes show maximum price volatility: in Metro, they can be purchased for 83.10 hryvnias, while in Megamarket the price reaches 120 hryvnias per kilogram.
Cucumbers and onions
Meanwhile, there is also significant differentiation in prices in the cucumber market. The most expensive 'Estafeta' cucumbers in Megamarket cost 135 hryvnias per kilogram, while in Metro the same product is offered for 83.10 hryvnias. Smooth, short-fruited, and ordinary cucumbers also vary in price depending on the chain. As for onions, they demonstrate more stable prices. The prices for different varieties of onions can also be compared across various chains, including Megamarket, Auchan, and Metro. Ukrainian retail chains have recorded significant fluctuations in prices for basic vegetables. Prices for tomatoes and cucumbers differ from chain to chain, making the choice for consumers somewhat more complicated.
